Islands located in Karnataka


Soans Island is a private island situated in the mouth of river Varahi at Basrur near Kundapur, in Udupi district.

Kurumgad island got its name from the shape. Kurma means tortoise in kannada language. It is just 18km(10 nautical miles) off the cost of Karwar in Uttara Kannada (North Kanara) district.
St. Mary's island (Thonsepar and Coconut island) is a group of four islands at a distance of 6km from Udupi. It is located off the coast of Malpe, Udupi district.

Netrani island or Pigeon island, situated 22km(12 nautical miles) from the off Bhatkal coast near Murudeshwar, in Uttara Kannada (North Kanara) district. Local people call it as Netra Gudo.

Cauvery Nisargadhama is an island 3km from Kushalnagar in Kodagu district. The reason behind the formation of island was river Cauvery.

Uppinakudru or Salt island is situated 6km north off the Kundapur coast, in Udupi district.

Higund island is located just 3km from Honnavar town of North Kanara district. It is easily accessible through Adkar or Kodani village through country boat.

Anjadip or Angediva island is accessible through Canacona of Goa but it is closer to Binaga of Karwar taluk in the north west of Karnataka.


Oyster Rocks are the rocks and islets near Karwar with an ancient light house attracting visitors.

Basavaraja Durga Island is situated 3-4km off the coast of Honnavar, in Uttara Kannada district.

Naradagadde or Naradagadda is an island located on the Krishna River in Raichur district.
It is at a distance of 31km and located north east of Raichur city.

Koormagadde is another island situated very near to Naradagadde on the Krishna River. it is located at a distance of 31km from Raichur. 

Lakshadweep is a group of islets at a distance of 144 nautical miles from Mangaluru (Mangalore). It has 36 islands in which 10 are inhabited. 4 islets are recently formed. There are five submerged reefs and 17 of them are still uninhabited. Cruise ships from Mangalore take 14 hours to reach the island. The most beautiful island has coral and colorful fish hidden in their lagoons.

The Mermaid or Merger island is near to Bengre from Sultan Battery of Mangalore. It is a place from where Gururpura river joins the sea. The island has an area of fifty acres with a shape resembling cuttle fish. Mermaid Islands and Resorts India has cruise facilities from Sultan Battery during weekends and provides dinner on the island.  It is a mere 2 nautical miles (4km) and 15 minutes journey, on a cruise boat having 32 seats capacity. The boat club situated at Sultan battery has boat facilities for people who want to enjoy on the island.
